Boarding At Iloilo Airport
This is Part 4 of the Sights & Scenes On My Iloilo To Cebu To Tacloban Flights.
I stayed at the lounge until 11:00AM when boarding for my flight to CEB was called.Iloilo Airport's Gate 6 is a Bus Gate. Meaning you need to go down via stairs. That is from 3rd down to ground level. If it is hard for you to do, keep reading so you'll know.
It's Getting Messy Here
Meanwhile, I was kind of surprised there was that "Responsorial Psalm" on the side! But oh, I gathered from my sporadically faltering memory, that today was a Monday.
That means they held their Sunday Mass somewhere around this area, but forgot to return that board and those chairs to their proper safekeeping places. Very Filipino!
I mean not the Sunday Mass is Very Pinoy, but the pagiging iresponsable at tamad.
Aba, if we'll be technical about it as airport people should be, that's a safety hazard.
Safety & Security
Look behind the ground stewardess, monobloc chairs (from the mass) are stacked just at the narrow hallway, where passengers pass going down the stairs. Delikado.Actually, that's an Emergency Exit made as a boarding area too. Eh, in the corporate world, Rule Number 1 on Safety/Emergency Procedures is to 'clear all passageways of movable or unmovable, permanent or temporary obstructions', right? Here, it is not.
Why? Because an airport is not the corporate world? At dahil gobyerno sila? Eh they should be pa nga the trusted role models of all public and private institutions, di ba?
Listen. THAT, is a hazard. A misadventure waiting to happen. How?
Oras ng takbuhan, that is actually the way out, masasagi ang mga monobloc chairs na yan, kakalat sa daanan, that will impede quick and proper evacuation. Failure na!
In my expert opinion *wink* *wink*, it should even be fine to use that emergency exit route as a boarding gate kung wala na talagang iba. That is because, we passengers are constantly moving (to board). In an emergency, the flow will just become faster.
Now, with monobloc chairs in the hallway, before boarding passengers, PAL should have called the attention-of, even complain-to airport authorities (CAAP) - unless, si PAL man gali ang in-charge pag-ligpit sang chairs kag white board. Ay caramba haha!
That is the way with these pamisa-pamisa at various public and private institutions, right? We always have sponsors in-charge of not only the 'offertory' but also getting a priest and doing venue logistics. Good, pero dapat ligpit agad after every activity.
Comfort & Convenience
Teka.., hazard na, unsightly din, inconvenient pa. Kulang ba ang binayad na terminal fee para padaanin sa pasilyong masikip at palakarin sa hagdan ang mga pasahero?
Three floors yan! Paano ang me rayuma? Hindi ako ha? hindi pa, awa ng langit! I said above "keep reading so you'll know". This is that part of my story where you'll know!
That block of concrete at right, behind the monobloc chairs, is actually the elevator. It is just unfortunate that its door is heavily guarded by a floor polisher! O gino-o ko!
Note, the girl in red & black stripes is not a passenger and definitely not a PAL staff! She is a member of the airport's cleaning staff. Why was she there tending to bags?
Those are her belongings, she just finished a 'costume change' and getting ready to go. She's probably on the first shift. And, that elevator lobby - is their sort of "office".
Aw, not really office. Maybe some sort of staging area, stock room or lounge for the airport's cleaning staff. Kaya andyan mga gamit nila. I don't even know what to say.
My goodness naman, that is an elevator lobby already being used as boarding gate. Tapos opisina at stock room din ng cleaners? How cruel of their airport authorities!
I even believe, "cruel" is too light a word. It should be "how idiotic"!
For all you know, that might be the reason why one of the PAL agents is not smiling. Tingnan nyo, abaw ah parang nakasimangot pa nga yata eh! Parang me kaaway ba!
Ayan, hala kayo, all because of Gate 6 hahaha!
What's Wrong?
You may be asking "Why in the first place, is there something like Gate 6?" "Why do passengers have to walk down 3 floors of stairs?" "Is there a lack of gates already?"
In my honest, humble, confident, expert, atrevida opinion... there is no lack of gates. There just seems to be a lack of gates, because of an apparent airport design flaw.
It now appears that when this airport was designed, there probably was no rigorous consideration of the "future use" by airlines, what planes they will be using to where.
Aw, that is science yes, as that involves gathering and interpreting data, comparing them to corporate plans and projects, that may not be all countable. Yet, important.
Since "important", those things should have been reviewed meticulously. Not that...
They made an airport having gates with aerobridges (sosyal di ba) that literally can't stoop down to serve small propeller airplanes, due to height restriction or limitation.
Pang-Airbus A320/319, Boeing B737 or bigger lang. Wala pang small planes. But as we can see, PAL and Cebu Pacific and the even smaller ones like AirSwift use those little planes extensively on the islands. Solution? Bus Gates. Pak, walang Bus Gates!
Mind you, it's not just Iloilo. It is the same for its sister airports CGY, DVO, BCD, CEB, even MNL T1, and T2. You will notice the inconvenience when riding smaller planes.
Ginawan, ginagawan ng paraan na puro haphazard. Examples? Ayan na nga, Gate 6 ng Iloilo. Just like Gates 25A or 25B of Cebu. They are/were not original Bus Gates.
An obvious indicator that they were/are not really bus gates is: there is no escalator and/or no elevator - kaya ini bala sa Iloilo, dira nalang sa emergency exit gin-butang!
Is there a better remedy if only for passenger comfort? Oo naman, gawan ng proper access from the departure gate down to ground level - like at NAIA T3, yun papunta sa Gate 131 etc. na congested na nga rin as of now, di ba? But, with proper access.
Okay, with all that... I can say "there is hope" - at least for the future. Have you been to the new Panglao Airport? Check-out Gates 8 and 9, nasa ground level na mismo.
Yan! Kakaputak kakaputak ko, meron yatang nakinig sa mga sinasabi ko!
But let us leave that there. I passed thru the "gate" and went down to ground level.
Let's talk about it next. And children... there's even a quiz waiting for you!
