Orchid Garden, At Changi Airport

I didn't know there's a 'live' Orchid Garden inside an airport! I do know there are a lot of orchid gardens in the Philippines, and I know too, that almost all of them are actually plant / gardening stores that sell orchids among other flowers, plants or weeds. I also heard that orchids are expensive as they are rare, hard to grow, delicate to handle, THUS, only filthy rich lolas grow real non-commercial orchid gardens!

So eto ang kwento ko..,

Whiling my transit time away, I rode the Skytrain from Terminal 1 (T1) to Terminal 2 (T2). Joyride lang hehe! Pagbigyan, walang ganyan sa Pilipinas 'no! Ah, the skytrain station at T2 is near Harry's Bar and one of the smoking rooms! I swung by, had a bottle of Corona Beer and puffing to while my time away!

'Energized' after some time, I went to take the other Skytrain from T2 to T3. As I walked, I heard some "surely-Pinay" twang say "teka Rafael, let us take a photograph of this one, this is a rare variety". Awh, I actually already rolled my eyeballs thinking "ay si misis, magpa-kodak sa bulaklakan"! Why not, di ba?

But (this time lang yata), things churned fast in my lowly brain. Wha! She pronounced a crisp "Rafael", not Raffy, Raffa, Paeng nor Pael! She also used "photograph", not photo, picture, snap, kodak, shot, pic nor snapshot. And she said "photograph of", not "with" nor "at". Plus, I heard the phrase "rare variety"! Obviously she wanted a picture of the thing, not her with, not her at that rare variety.

I stood some moments, smiling while watching them. Na-mesmerize ang true blue social climber hehehe! Me sinasabi nga ang magsing-irog na ito. Iba ang arrive nila. Very dignified! Tunay na alta sociedad ang galaw! Si Lola branded na handbag lang ang dala nakasabit sa braso. Si Lolo, iPad!

Can you imagine nanaginip ako habang nakatayo? Yeah, I daydreamed, sana mga magulang ko silang dalawa! Ayun nag-piktyuran na sa tabi ng mga bulaklak. Eventually, nahuli ako (didn't I actually expect that to happen? asuus)! The lady saw me standing there, obviously looking at them and smiling. Then she smiled at me and said "beautiful flowers". I said akina po ang camera, picturan ko kayong dalawa!

"Oh my goodness Pilipino ka pala, o sige hijo, eto pa eto pa" said the lady as she gave me her iPhone. So kwentuhan na habang nagkokodakan! Akala daw nila hapon ako "naka-short at naka-haversack ka kasi" said the gentleman. "Haversack", that's his word! Kakaibang mangusap, nakaka-aliw pakinggan!

Anyway, they told me a barrage of things about orchids.., and now I easily forgot many of them! They said this was one of the most extensive orchid collections they saw in an indoor place. The plants are very healthy (daw) which means they are regularly meticulously cared for since orchids are 'maselan'!

I said that I have passed this way many times, and that all along I thought those were made of plastic or cloth materials like the ones that people buy from SM or Divisoria or Baclaran! They both laughed and educated me that all orchids in this garden are real, even those logs, moss, fern and other plants.

Of course, na-nose-bleed na ako when they started naming ALL the orchids that we could see in that garden.., sure ako more than 20 ang nabanggit nila. Ang sumagi nalang sa isip ko was "ohmygaawd"!
Eto pa.., they pointed to me the national flower of Singapore - an orchid na pangalan yata ng tao since it starts with a "Miss", and even pointed to one that is named "Changi Airport Orchid". Yes, me ganun!

I was so amazed at the variety and their knowledge about orchids I just stood there listening to them as if hypnotized! There was passion when they said any story or anything about orchids. I now think, they must be 'orchid enthusiasts' or 'orchid hobbyists' or 'orchidologists' - whatever the right word is!

That.., surely was.., some OMG learning! And from fellow Pinoys na, alta sociedad pa!

Travel is education..,

But I am now thinking if I should change my travel wardrobe! No more 'short' and 'haversack'?!

Okay, let's go elsewhere!
