Vientiane Walk - Nam Phou Park / Kilometer Zero Marker
Let's start the walk with this park where the country's KM0 marker is located.
Its as if I started my walk here since this was just beside my hotel. Well, I glanced at it when I went out this morning. But photos you'll see were my takes from last night.
Anyway..,
It is a 'circular park' with a fountain in the middle. It is not big, probably just as wide as Remedios Circle along Adriatico St. in Malate (sakaling alam nyo pa yun hehehe).
This isn't mala-Luneta or ala-Rizal Monument, but as you can see in this picture, it is the country's "Kilometer Zero Marker", established by French colonizers of long ago.
The area is a 'central square' (na bilog hehe) ringed by restaurants, bars, hotels, etc.,
Ideally middle-of-town. In two of these many photos, you'll even be able to spot, that where I stayed for the night (Ibis Hotel) is a few steps away from this 'public plaza'.
And by the way, it's not all 'establishments' that surround the park & fountain. There are sitting areas for people to "just hang around" and enjoy the garden atmosphere.
Nam Phou Park is historical. Originally built during the French colonial era (1900s), this plaza and fountain are marks of the old city’s social life and even marketplace.
Yes, over time, it has been a go-to meeting place and still hosts scheduled morning markets or bazaars. And since last year, there are live bands playing in the evening.
Ang balita na nasagap ko during the party last night, this place falls part of an area that has been 'privatized' for a 30-year concession (lease?) to a mall developer. Da!
Many locals (daw) are against that privatization, as this is already a heritage park.
Let's wait-and-see what will come out of this "center-of-town" in the coming years!
Oh, where did you morning as in saan ka nanaman inumaga? Here's a peek at where I slept last night - literally in the heart of the city - but let us talk about this hotel later.I was already on my early morning walk, crossed the road, turned back and said "oh so that's my hotel pala"! It looked different last night - it was dark and I was rushing.
It is still part of Nam Phou Park, so it's at the very "center" of Vientiane! Where's that park in the scene above? At left edge of that photo, after the green tarp - di nakikita!
Hey, before we go far and out, look at that green signboard on the lower right corner of the same photo above. It points to 'something interesting' that I didn't know about.
Abaw ah, what did I know about this place anyway, di ba? Wala akong inalam, since I knew I had no time to roam. That, made everything as "lovely surprise encounters".
Let's talk about them in my succeeding stories!
