Salukara Drive-Thru

Scene: 0703H we were rushing out of Borongan to some southern towns, and eventually to Tacloban.

Well, you can call this a Karan-un [kakanin] Drive-Thru as they have a lot. But I always buy Salukara!
As you can see, they also sell many other delicacies - rice cakes or things mostly made of ground rice. All of them are delectably 'morning fresh' (even still warm). I like them all - but my favorite is Salukara.

What is Salukara? Patay tayo dyan! It is like a pancake, made of local ingredients. But I know there are now lots of write-ups/images about it on the web, so just google it hehe! I'm only best at eating them!

Where in that picture is the Salukara? Oh, where the white arrow points, those are the Salukara. I also am familiar with all others around it like bibingka, bakintol, kutsinta, puto, etc., but Salukara esda best!

Where is that place? Oh well, oo nga naman. It's at the very center of Borongan City, along the national highway (Real St) at the city plaza (Plaza De Santiago). See that colorful wall behind the manangs? Ah that's actually the back wall of the plaza's cultural stage. That (I think), also doubles as a waiting shed.

It's also just across the big tree (Acacia?) at that controversial little park that has had many names!

Are the vendors always there? When is the time to buy Salukara? Ah, Salukara tastes really good when it's still hot (okay, warm hehe). They are cooked at dawn, sold at that place early mornings, and would usually be sold-out by 8AM. The Manangs don't cook too many in a day, since Salukara "stiffens" fast.

Some of those jolly women may still be there, selling other things for the rest of the day but usually no more Salukara! By the way, we usually do not get off our vehicles to buy from them. Drive-thru nga eh!

Sosyalin din kami oi. Ang drive-thru hindi lang Sausage McMuffin, me Salukara din!

Teka, trivia muna: that painting/mural behind them, actually tries to depict this very place! The painted tree [wara guban-on!] is just across them in real life (behind me as I took that picture). They should be to the right of those 3 tricycles in the painting. Unfortunately, the 'pintor' didn't paint them in the mural.

Trivia pa more: I believe every town in Eastern Samar does have somebody that makes/sells Salukara since it is a local favorite. But it is only here in Borongan, where I see them being sold by the sidewalk. So don't make a drive-by just about anywhere in this big province and hope to stumble upon Salukara!

At other towns, you should probably find them at the mercado [that means palengke or public market]; at little family stores or sari-sari stores; or at the window sill of the home of those who make Salukara.

Plus, in quieter places like my beloved Oras, some folks (usually kids) walk around town, intermittently shouting saaaalukaraa! If you observe, people (mostly kids too) would rush out of their houses to buy.

Oh at times you may hear adults ask ano it, salukara? or even mayda bibingka oday?. Salukara nga eh!

Like That nga gi-la-like-da-ti!

Maupay nga aga as in Good Morning!
