"Changi Teardop Art": The Kinetic Rain
I had to do this - I mean take a video of this work of art, because it was "vehemently" requested by one of you my online friends. Yan na nga ba sinasabi ko, on updating my whereabouts "almost live"! Most of the time may mga request for this and that. So, Mel, here it is - video talaga! And come to think of it, I am not complaining! Naaliw din ako e. So, posting this here for Mel, and you all my avid blog readers!
The request was... "Kuya, could you please take a picture of that teardrop-like artwork na gumagalaw sa Changi Airport Terminal 1 Check-in Counters. Kung sana nga video. I took a picture of that with my fone lang when I was there, kaso hindi ganun kaganda. Please please please, sige na please please."
How could I say no? My Jetstar flight from Bali arrived at T1. My connecting flight to Cebu via Air Asia also departs from T1. Since both are low cost airlines, wala akong "transit" privilege at Changi Airport.
Therefore, I had to do the normal arrival procedures, then make my way to departure area for check-in, WHICH MEANT, I had to pass by this art installation even if I did not want to! So ayan, once I emerged on top of the escalator from arrival area (eh ito naman unang nakikita), I stopped to shoot this video!
The official name of this thing as an art installation, by the way is: "Kinetic Rain"
So okay, since we are on this topic anyway, let me describe that art installation for Mel and you all...
This thing is made up of 1,216 'seemingly' floating balls called "bronze droplets". Ah okay, so bronze droplets, hindi "tear droplets", although they look like so. Well, depending on your mood, they can be "whatever droplets" or, sige na nga, tear droplets! Luha na kung luha! Malalaki sila ha, about the size of a baseball! Each one weighs about 180 grams or about 0.4lbs. Kasing-laki at bigat ng meatballs!
The "choreography" is controlled by computerized high-precision motors. No music - though I think it is better that way, since this area of the airport has so many sounds/noises anyway. You can mute the volume of your phone or PC as you view the video. It's a mesmerizing thing to watch, almost hypnotic! Ang sabi, it is supposed to portray the movements of an 'airport community' collaborating to provide a "Positively Surprising Changi experience for passengers and visitors" - daw. Hmm, but I guess you can imagine or interpret it in any manner you like. The beauty of art, it means many things to many people!
Hey I have a doctor-friend who told me that the movements of those balls do have a calming effect on people. She says it's a psychological thing, where, the viewer is affected by making the brain relax due to the slow 'fluid' movement. It shifts the thinking process to a state of being 'calmly organized' due to the suggestive power of the balls synchronously forming many shapes! Hmm, she has a point, I think!
